Red Rock Canyon.
Valley of Fire.
And for good reason. They're both ridiculously pretty.
But there's something I think people should know before they book a photographer, pick a location, and assume they'll just show up with a camera:
Professional photography at these locations can require a permit.
And depending on the location and type of session, there can be fees, applications, insurance requirements, restrictions, and advance planning involved.
That doesn't mean you can't have your photos there.
It just means you should know what you're getting into first.
Nature Photo Permits: At a Glance
Because pretty pictures are fun. Permit paperwork... less so.
Red Rock Canyon
Professional family and wedding portraits can require authorization. BLM says permits must be obtained in advance when required.
Valley of Fire
Nevada State Parks requires permits for commercial or staged photography involving clients.
Other Nature Locations
There are other beautiful nature options around Las Vegas. I can help you find a location that fits your session and the planning level you want.
Red Rock and Valley of Fire aren't the only places around Las Vegas where you can get beautiful desert and nature photos.
Do you need a permit for photography at Red Rock Canyon?
For professional photography, you may need a permit at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
The Bureau of Land Management specifically says that professional family and wedding portraits can be considered use of “models,” which is one of the circumstances where a photography permit is required. BLM also states that permits need to be acquired in advance. Bureau of Land Management
So if you're thinking:
“We're just doing family photos. We're not having a giant production.”
That doesn't necessarily mean you're exempt.
A professional photographer photographing clients is different from casually taking vacation snapshots with your phone or personal camera.
📸 What about just taking our own vacation pictures?
That's different.
BLM considers casual personal-use photography to generally be okay without a film permit. The issue comes in when you're talking about professional/commercial photography, clients, models, props, or other circumstances that fall under the permit requirements. Bureau of Land Management
So your family taking iPhone pictures on vacation?
Totally different situation from hiring a professional photographer for a family portrait session.
How do you get a Red Rock photography permit?
Red Rock is managed by the
Bureau of Land Management, so the process is different from Valley of Fire.
For a professional photography session, the best first step is to contact the Red Rock Canyon recreation staff and explain exactly what you're planning.
BLM currently directs people to contact its Outdoor Recreation staff about permits, and applications can be handled through its permit system depending on the type of use. Bureau of Land Management
The basic process
1.
Decide what you're photographing.
Tell them whether it's an elopement, wedding, family session, engagement session, branding session, etc.
2. Tell them you're working with a professional photographer.
This is important because professional client photography can fall under the permit requirements.
3. Contact BLM before your session.
Don't assume that because you see other photographers working there, your particular session automatically doesn't need authorization.
4. Complete whatever permit/application process applies to your shoot.
5. Pay the applicable permit fee.
BLM lists professional/commercial photography permit fees as varying based on the activity, and wedding permit fees also vary. Bureau of Land Management
6. Have your approved documentation with you.
The exact requirements can change depending on the type of session, so I recommend checking directly with BLM rather than relying on an old photographer blog or a random Facebook post.
What about Valley of Fire?
Valley of Fire State Park is a little different because it's managed by the Neva
da Division of State Parks.
The state specifically requires a permit for commercial or staged photography, including portrait photography involving clients. Nevada State Parks
So if you're hiring a professional photographer for maternity photos, family photos, engagement photos, wedding photos, or another client session, you should plan on checking the photography permit requirements.
How do you get a Valley of Fire photography permit?
The Nevada Division of State Parks currently says applications should be submitted at
least 30 days before the scheduled shoot.
The application process includes:
A completed photography application
- Certificate of liability insurance
- Additional insured endorsement
- Signed park-specific rules
- A $25 non-refundable application fee
And yes, there is a permit fee on top of the application fee.
The current Nevada State Parks photography fee structure lists a Class
A permit at $50 per day for 2–15 people or 1–3 vehicles.
And park entrance/parking fees are separate from the photography permit fee. Nevada State Parks.
📝 If you want Red Rock or Valley of Fire...
💡 Requirements vary by location and session, so always verify the current rules with the land manager.
💸 The permit is separate from your photography session fee.
This is probably the most important thing to understand when budgeting.
If you book a photographer for a session at Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire, the location's permit costs are not automatically included in the photographer's session price.
The permit is an additional location expense.
So your budget could look something like:
Always confirm the current fee and permit requirements before booking, because these rules and fees can change.
⚠️ Please don't just skip the permit
I know it can be tempting.
Especially when you see people posting gorgeous Red Rock or Valley of Fire photos and think:
“They did it, so I guess it's fine.”
But that's not really how it works.
Some photographers may take the chance, but I don't recommend planning your session around hoping nobody notices.
BLM says permits need to be acquired in advance when required, and violations can result in citations. Bureau of Land Management and Nevada State Parks has its own permit requirements and enforcement rules for commercial photography.
I'd much rather help you figure out the location requirements ahead of time than have your photographer worrying about whether someone is going to come over and stop your session.
🌵 Here's the fun part: You don't have to use Red Rock or Valley of Fire
There are other beautiful nature locations around Las Vegas.
You don't have to pick the most famous location.
Red Rock and Valley of Fire are beautiful, but they're not the only places around Las Vegas for gorgeous nature photos. If you want the desert look without the extra permit planning, ask me about some of the other locations I use.
I have a nature location I use that gives you a similar desert-meets-nature feel without requiring the same type of session permit process.
That can make things considerably easier.
Instead of:
Find location → research permit → submit application → pay fee → deal with requirements → coordinate everything
You can spend more of your energy on:
Pick your outfits → show up → have fun → take pretty pictures.
If you book a session with me and you're looking for that desert/nature look without wanting to deal with a Red Rock or Valley of Fire permit, I can tell you about the location and help you plan around it.
I'll also help you figure out things like:
- 📍 Where we're meeting
- 🌅 What time we should shoot
- 📍 Where we're meeting
- 👗 What to wear
- ☀️ What the lighting will be like
- 📸 What types of photos we'll get
- 🚗 What you need to know before arriving
There isn't one location that's right for everybody.
Red Rock might be exactly what you've been picturing.
Valley of Fire might be worth the extra planning because you love those dramatic red rock formations.
Or you might look at the whole permit process and think:
“Can we just go somewhere pretty?”
Yes. That's where I can help.
Whether you're planning:
- 💍 A Las Vegas elopement
- 💕 Engagement photos
- 👨👩👧👦 Family photos
- 🤰 Maternity photos
- 🐶 Photos with your dog
- 📸 A creative portrait session
- 🌵 Just some really pretty couple photos
If you're looking for Red Rock Canyo
n photography, Valley of Fire photography, or a beautiful nature session somewhere around Las Vegas, reach out and tell me what you're imagining.
You don't have to know the exact location yet. Tell me what you want the photos to feel like, and we can figure out the rest.
Sometimes the answer really is Red Rock.
Sometimes it's Valley of Fire.
And sometimes there's a pretty little spot you didn't even know existed.
