  • The Story Behind Falling Rocks Photography

Mom and I at my college graduation from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado

The name Falling Rocks Photography comes from a story my mom told me about her childhood. She was a military brat, traveling all over the world, and during road trips along mountain roads, she often saw signs that said: “Watch for Falling Rocks.” 🪨

As a little girl, she asked her dad what it meant. Instead of giving a not so kid-friendly answer about rocks falling from the mountains, he spun a story to make her smile: the sign was a reminder to watch for Falling Rocks, a princess who sometimes hung around the mountains. That became one of her favorite childhood memories—and now it lives on in my business (you may have noticed the little pricess in my logo) 👑

They sometimes say... "You lose the good ones too soon", and man was that true when it came to my mom. I lost my mom to cancer when I was 22. She was the first big loss I ever dealt with. Dealing with grief (and honestly all of the to-dos after someone dies) can be really overwhelming. I noticed that one of the few things bringing me comfort during that time was photos. For a moment, it felt like she was still there with me — smiling, laughing, alive.

My mom LOVED to take pictures (but not in a mom influencer way.. that wasnt even a thing back then... but more in a... lets capture these memories way). We always had disposable cameras lying around the house. Picking up prints from the drugstore after a fun trip was a ritual.

So when I decided I wanted to be a photographer, I knew a piece of her had to be involved somehow... and once I thought of the name "Falling Rocks Photography", I knew it was perfect.

Trust me, I know life can get really... (excuse my language) shitty, but it also has its beautiful, crazy, fun moments, and those moments deserve to be captured and remembered. You never know who may be looking back on them one day.

A Few Things My Mom Loved

    • 🏈 My mom loved OU football (and really any football, but OU was her team! She used to say the college games were better to watch since they had more to prove. I, however, never really did get into football like she did and she would always joke and say "Where did I go wrong?" to which I would joke back that she wanted to it too much... we always could mess with eachother!)
    • 🎸 Rocking out to AC/DC (she had "You Shook Me All Night Long" as her ringtone for the longest time (remember back when people bought ringtones?!)
    • 📚 Losing herself in books and movies (fun fact: she was actually a divorce lawyer for most of my childhood, but she always wanted to become a librarian.. and she did just that! she used to work at Searchlight and Boulder City library. BC Library holds a book club that she used to run and named it "Becca's Book Club" which warms my heart)
    • 🌸 Tending to her gorgeous garden (that woman had a GREEN THUMB if I've ever seen one... unfortunately, the skill was not passed down)
    • 🪶 Teaching me about our Native American Cherokee history (I learned after she died that she was did a ton of pro bono work for the Native American community. It was such a cool thing to learn about her... she will always be my biggest inspiration.)

My mom also knew that life can sometimes get shitty, and one of the main things I rememeber her telling me during hard times was.. "Sometimes you're playing dodgeball with life, but the game can't last forever," meaning life may throw thing after thing at you, but it will end at one point, you just have to hang in there. (Realistically, we will all play multiple games of dodgeball with life throughout our time on Earth, so I think of her quote often).

If you made it this far, thanks for reading. I love sharing my mom with the world. And to those experiencing grief or hardships, just know I am sending you lots of love.

    I hope to chat soon!
