If you’ve ever had a pet that felt like more than just a pet—more like a soulmate—you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about when I say “soul dogs.” They’re the ones that come into your life at just the right moment, the ones who seem to understand you better than anyone else, and the ones who stick by your side through every high and low.
For me, that soul dog is Mazy.
How Mazy Found Me
I still remember the day I got her like it was yesterday. My fiancé Damon and I already had a dog, but I was deep in the throes of puppy fever (it’s a real thing, I swear!). One day, I stumbled across a Craigslist ad for puppies in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. At first, I thought, “This has to be a scam.” But something told me to reach out, and before I knew it, we were on our way to meet the litter.
When we got to the house, I was looking at a little black puppy I’d seen in the listing photo. I was already this close to taking her home when the owners asked, “Do you want to see the blonde one?”
Here’s where my social anxiety almost got in the way. I was ready to say no—ready to politely leave with the little black puppy I’d come for. But Damon, thankfully, chimed in with a casual, “Sure, let’s see her.”
And then they brought Mazy out.
The minute I saw her, I just knew. It’s hard to describe that feeling, but if you’ve met your soul dog, you know what I mean. She was mine, and I was hers.
Two little girls from the family asked if they could say goodbye to her before we left. I don’t know why, but that moment always stuck with me. Maybe because it’s clear that Mazy’s been spoiled and loved since day one—and that hasn’t changed a bit.
A Bond Like No Other
Mazy and I spent her puppyhood in Colorado together. I was a fresh college grad figuring out life, and she was an energetic, happy ball of fur figuring out the world. She’s been with me through everything since: heartbreaks, makeups (don’t worry, Damon and I worked it out), and one of the hardest moments of my life—the death of my mom.
When my mom was sick, Mazy was always there. She’d cuddle up to me after long days and somehow make everything feel a little lighter. I remember my mom once saying, “Wow, you two really have a bond like no other.”
She was right.
I’ve had pets my whole life, but none quite like Mazy. She’s my best friend, my adventure buddy, my comfort during tough times, and the reason I smile when I need it most. I honestly can’t imagine life without her.
Why You Should Capture Moments With Your Pets
If you’ve ever had a soul dog (or a soul cat, soul horse—you name it), you understand just how important they are to our lives. They’re not just animals; they’re family. And just like you’d take photos to remember your favorite people, it’s just as important to capture memories with your pets.
That’s why I always encourage people to include their pets in their photo sessions. Whether it’s a professional session or a candid shot, those photos will become priceless memories. Trust me when I say you’ll never regret having pictures to look back on.
Think about it: photos of your pup running through a field, snuggling up with you on a blanket, or giving you their goofy smile—those are the moments you’ll want to hold onto forever.

Final Thoughts
Mazy changed my life in ways I never could’ve imagined, and I’m so grateful to have her by my side (usually begging for a treat or barking to get her way). If you have a soul dog—or any pet who means the world to you—don’t wait to celebrate them. They’re here for such a short time, but their love lasts forever.
Let’s make sure you have photos that tell your story.
